What is an MP4, and why does it transcribe so well?
MP4 is a container format — it packages compressed video, audio, subtitles, and metadata into one file. The video inside is usually compressed with H.264 and the audio with AAC, but an MP4 can hold other codecs too. This is exactly why MP4 is the most widely supported video format: both mobile and desktop devices can play it.
